Energy lingers. Just like dust collects in the corners of a room, so does the energy of arguments, stress, grief—or even just the heaviness of life. And just like we clean our homes physically, we have to clean them energetically. Space cleansing isn’t just tradition—it’s survival for the soul. Whether you're coming out of an intense ceremony, a long week of chaos, or just want to honor your space and spirit, this guide will walk you through different ways to clear energy, rooted in ancient practices and practical wisdom.
Why Cleanse Your Space?
We are energetic beings, constantly interacting with the environments around us. A space can hold peace or pain, clarity or confusion. Cleansing helps:
Remove stagnant or negative energy.
Restore balance and peace.
Prepare for meditation, ceremony, or healing work.
Protect and fortify your home or workspace.
The Sacred Smoke: Sage, Palo Santo, Frankincense, and Myrrh
Burning plants is an ancient ritual—a bridge between the physical and spiritual. Each has its own purpose.
Sage (White Sage):
Traditionally used by Indigenous peoples of North America, sage purifies and clears heavy energy. When burned, it releases negative ions—literally cleaning the air on a physical and spiritual level.
Use: After arguments, illness, or when you feel "off."
Purpose: Purification and spiritual reset.
Note: Always honor the sacredness. Don’t just burn—pray, thank the plant, and use with respect.
Palo Santo ("Holy Wood"):
Used in South American traditions, this wood brings in positive energy after a cleanse. It’s sweet, grounding, and connects you to Earth.
Use: To bring peace, attract blessings after sage.
Purpose: Uplift and balance the energy.
Note: Only use ethically sourced Palo Santo.
Frankincense & Myrrh:
Burned for thousands of years, these resins connect to the divine. Used in temples, churches, and ceremonies.
Use: During prayer, meditation, or when calling in higher guidance.
Purpose: Protection, divine connection, deep clearing.
Note: Best burned on charcoal discs in a fire-safe bowl.
The Ritual: How to Cleanse a Space
Set Your Intention:
Energy responds to focus. Decide what you’re clearing and what you’re inviting. Is it peace? Clarity? Protection?Close the Windows First:
Trap the stagnant energy. Let it build, let it surface. This helps draw out what’s stuck.Begin with Sage:
Light your sage bundle, let it smolder. Move clockwise, starting at the entrance. Waft smoke into corners, under beds, behind doors.Use Feathers to Move Energy:
A feather isn’t just symbolic—it’s practical. It stirs the energy, moves the smoke, and helps push out the heaviness. Now Open the Windows:
Let the energy escape. As you move through the rooms, invite the old energy out. Visualize it leaving, making space for the new.Glasses of Water at Entryways:
Water absorbs energy. Place clear glasses or bowls of water near doors and windows to catch lingering heaviness. Discard outside after the cleanse. After Sage, Bring in Palo Santo:
With the windows closed again, light Palo Santo. Move slowly, filling the now-cleansed space with sweetness and calm. This seals the space with blessings.
Aftercare: Protecting and Sealing
Rosemary Water:
Rosemary is a protector. Boil fresh rosemary in water, let it cool, and use it to splash doorways, windows, or your own body.Bless the Space:
After cleansing, bless your space. Speak aloud:“This space is sacred. Only love and light may enter.”
Leave an offering—a crystal, flower, or prayer of gratitude.
Open the Windows:
Once the space feels clear, close the windows to seal in the new energy.
Special Cleansing Situations:
After Intense Energy Work or Ceremony:
Salt baths, rosemary splashes, and a full smoke cleanse. Rest. Drink water. Ground yourself. Before Starting New Projects:
Clear the space to invite fresh ideas and energy. Light a candle for focus.Moving into a New Home:
Cleanse the entire space. Burn sage, follow with Palo Santo. Set intentions for your new chapter.Feeling Heavy or Anxious:
Smudge your body. Waft smoke over your head, heart, hands, and feet. Repeat until you feel lighter.
Final Thoughts:
Space cleansing is about more than smoke—it’s about honoring the unseen. It’s about taking responsibility for the energy we live in, work in, and share with others. The plants, the salts, the waters—they are allies. Use them with reverence. Whether you’re in a city apartment, a countryside home, or a kitchen basement, the energy you keep around you matters.
So light the sage. Open the windows. Peel the potatoes. And honor the sacredness in all things.
